It was such a beautiful Saturday afternoon today my husband & I thought it would be nice to take the 30 minute drive over to Ridgefield CT to visit the Aldrich Contemporary Museum of Art, a compact museum that never disappoints and today was no exception.
On view was the artist collective Chelpa Ferro, made up of 3 established Brazilian artist, Barrao, Luiz Zerbini and Sergio Mekler. The team is known for using sound from ordinary devices such as toothbrushes, drills and juice makers. In "Jungle Jam" they install 30 motors from blenders to the wall each with a plastic bag attached. The assemblages are then orchestrated from a computer, filling the room with rhythmic sound and visual surprise.
In the next room was their piece "Acusma", an installation of 30 Brazilian ceramic vases fitted with speakers playing up to 5 recorded voices. The musical narrative was generated by a computer selecting random notes that filled the room in a chorus of sound enlivening the ordinary objects strewn about the gallery floor.
